Dr. Pierre Theodore received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency in general surgery and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He also completed fellowships in transplant biology fellowship at Harvard Medical School and in cardiothoracic surgery at La Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, Paris, France. In 2004, Dr. Theodore joined the UCSF faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. In November 2007, he was named as the first recipient of the Van Auken Endowed Chair in Thoracic Oncology.
Dr. Theodore has extensive experience in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, a surgical technique that shortens hospitals stays, reduces pain and allows lung cancer patients to better tolerate adjuvant (post-surgical) chemotherapy treatment, if required. Dr. Theodore is an experienced lung transplant surgeon, the first in California to perform a non-heart-beating lung donor (NHBD) harvest, a breakthrough that holds great promise for alleviating organ shortages. Dr. Theodore is currently investigating lung transplants as a therapy for lung cancer patients with multifocal bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC).
Dr. Theodore is a member of the Stanley J. Sarnoff Endowment, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society for Heart Lung Transplant, The Transplantation Society, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He also served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval Reserve Medical Corps.
